Description
In July of 2022, the federal government implemented 9-8-8 as the National Mental Health Hotline. Georgia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) has been entrusted with enacting 9-8-8 in the state. The DBHDD seeks to improve their mobile crisis response units (MCRUs), which respond to 9-8-8 calls of people experiencing mental or behavioral crises. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its mobile crisis response, the Georgia DBHDD has tasked us with identifying best practices used by other states through a comparative case study. We will identify the top performing states that are demographically similar and then examine these states through interviews and document analysis to investigate the policies and strategies contributing to these states’ effectiveness in the field of mobile crisis response. Understanding what makes MCRUs successful is critical to the success of 9-8-8 and the improvement of mental health services in Georgia.
