Demystifying Energy Consumption

Team IO’s project centers around developing a product that empowers homeowners to reduce their energy consumption effectively. The product involves building a home energy management system using hardware installed in a breaker panel to read power consumption and software to engage the user with how they are using their energy.

The software will be able to also assign users to energy communities comprising of users with similar limiting energy efficiency characteristics such as house size, climate, and number of residents. These communities allow for users to compare their energy usage with the average for their house characteristics and engage in collaborative and competitive environments to reduce energy consumption leading to lower utility costs.

The project will also allow users to receive product recommendations based on their current appliance efficiency, get carbon impact reports, integrate with solar panels, and get proactive notifications when there are significant shifts in energy consumption.
