Description
This project was proposed by Dr. Steve Dickerson to further his patent application. The goal is to design a two cycle internal combustion engine that does not have an active cooling system. Because of the nature of the patent, the project involves the design of a single cylinder, which can then be incorporated into a larger system. The benefits of an adiabatic design include lower weight and potentially lower manufacturing cost, as well as increased efficiency because less thermal energy is lost through the cylinder walls. The main design challenges involve material selection to handle the increased temperature, as well as the cylinder geometry and the control of intake and exhaust gases.
